In the early 90s, it was cheap audio equipment that allowed numerous indie rock labels to spring up out of nowhere and change American music forever. A decade later and labels like Matador, Mute, SubPop, Epitaph, and Victory sell enough records to buy their owners mansions overlooking the Pacific plus retreats in the Caribbean. Ahh, to be a young entrepreneurial music lover in the 90s...

Punk Filmmakers

Well, if you missed your shot to cash in on the indie label explosion of the early 90s (and if your lazy ass missed out on the dotcoms in the late 90s, too), don't worry. It's not too late for you to learn from your asinine mistakes and take a shot for the gold again. With Final Cut Pro, MiniDV, Lloyd Kaufman's autobiography, and a fistful of gaffer's tape, you can join the digital movie explosion for a fraction of what grandpas Kevin Smith, Richard Linklater, and Quentin Tarantino had to fork over for their shitty one-location, talking heads flicks. And, unlike Robert Rodriguez, not only will you not have to sell your body to science for production, but you won't need Columbia Pictures to kick in north of $70Gs for post-production. You can do it yourself like a real life punk rocker.

Who will be the Matador, Mute, SubPop, and Victory of punk rock digital movies? The fat lady hasn't sung yet, but this new generation of moviemakers are all worthy bets.

A punk rock puppet show featuring Charles Manson as the savior of mankind? Yup, sounds like a first-time filmmaker to us. Nonetheless, Tim Armstrong can do no wrong these days (unless you count doing the Burning Angels as wrong... which we do not).

Live Freaky Die Freaky has been in production forever and runs the risk of hitting DVD shelves around the same time as Team America, but with an all scene-star cast of voices (not to mention Asia Argento & Viggo Mortensen), it might just kick ass.

You get to hear Asia Argento's voice.

CONCLUSION:

Who wants to hear Asia Argento's voice? That bitch can barely speak English. Her voice is just an unfortunate side effect of getting to look at her. Still, Tim Armstrong has the touch that turns everything to gold (except P!NK), so we're still excited to check this out.

Anyone who's been to the Van's Warped Tour has certainly wished that a serial killer would assault the festival and kill all those shitty bands. Well, finally someone has been genius enough to not only kill off Andrew WK, but to let us watch and snicker with glee.

Troma
's former youth crew, headed by said-genius Doug Sakmann, departed from Lloyd's House to create this 3+ hour-long bloodbath. Shot in conjunction with the Van's Warped Tour (and its sponsors), Punk Rock Holocaust is gore for the Hot Topic set (read as: this is an all-ages show). Still, Toxic Avenger eventually made his way to FOX-Kids as an animated crusader, so there's clearly something to be said for gorey lunchboxes.

CONCLUSION:

Look at that band list again and weep that this isn't a snuff film.
THREAT
King's Mob Productions

THREAT is the 800 lb gorilla of this list for 3 reasons:
- (a) it was shot on film, not video,
- (b) it is the first DiY hardcore "scene" movie ever acquired for a nationwide theatrical release, and
- (c) it's taking it's lumbering-ass time getting into the theaters!

THREAT takes Lower East Side straightedgers and underground hip hop kids on what looks to be a brutal ride through a full-on riot, where we're told they will learn to transform their youth violence into class war. Sounds like a heady NYHC brew, quite the opposite of Live Freaky Die Freaky's LA Punk sarcasm. The only question is whether or not King's Mob will be able to keep us awake long enough to deliver the message.

CONCLUSION:

Who knows if the goddamned thing will ever see the light of day?? We've been waiting forever to see this flick. King's Mob has claimed a Winter 2005 release, which seems possible only because distributor HIQI Media backs it up. We shall see...

ART SCHOOL SLUTS

No, we didn't misspell the director's name... this sure as hell ain't the Ian MacKaye who wrote "I don't fuck, at least I can fucking think!" This Eon McKai may not be *doing* the fucking, but anyone who can direct this kind of action must clearly have the skills to heat the grills.

Art School Sluts is the first contemporary foray of Hot Topic punk into hardcore porn. Yes, we've got Suicide Girls and Burning Angels, but with Art School Sluts we're talking about a hardcore porn movie produced in The Valley by one of the longest-running porn studios... yet directed by a scene kid and starring a bevy of hard-pounding music geeks.

Confused? So were we, until we had Eon down to the UnitShifter Radio Show and grilled him on what exactly he's planning to do as the Joe Camel of mallporn. If you missed the interview, keep an eye on the site, we'll be archiving and streaming the interviews soon.

Punk porn is here to stay. At least Eon is the real deal and has some sort of porn-geek master plan that is way over our heads but will probably work and leave us all mystified.
BUDDYHEAD PRESENTS: PUNK IS DEAD

The website/record label everyone loves to hate has entered the DVD fray with this upcoming video compilation featuring all the too-cool-for-school bands that earn the endorsement of the Buddyhead scene-socialites. That said, it's a pretty kickass lineup and will look better on your shelf than the newest Punk-O-Rama DVD. The only question is why Buddyhead would bother with a video compilation, which doesn't seem like the most effective way of making enemies. Hopefully this will have some of the post-emo cruelty Buddyhead has displayed on other releases like the Suicide Sampler.

SCENE POINTS:

CONCLUSION:
Apparently people buy music video compilations. So, as far as that genre goes, this looks better than most.
BEER: THE MOVIE

Straight outta Long Island (home of Public Enemy, Mobb Deep, and Taking Back Sunday) comes this offbeat reality/lifestyle flick drenched in booze. Filmmaker Peter Hoare set out to lower the standards of indie filmmaking by documenting his friends' drunken parties. It's kind of like a tattooed frat party and is sorta reminiscent of the documentary Raw Deal: A Question Of Consent (but without the daterape).

SCENE POINTS:
Cast: Brand New, Scraps and Heart Attacks.
Music: Kevin Devine, Brand New, Taking Back Sunday, Atmosphere, Northstar, Safety In Numbers, Hot Rod Circuit, The Movielife, and more.

SMUT:
Kind of a sausage party (but at least it's a sausage party with beer funnels?).


CONCLUSION:
BEER has been serialized by Fuse Network into small bits of debauchery, which might be the best way to ingest this libation. When it comes to DVD, it could be fun background at a party or might serve as good company when your buddies blow you off and you're left at home drinking alone. So, in that way, it could be the drunken version of NBC's Friends.

BOSTON BEATDOWN VOLUME II

Saving the best til last? Uh. Sort of.

Anyone who's been to Boston knows that Boston wants to be NY but with more beer brawls. A tall order, no doubt, but Boston may be well on its way to getting some bragging rights now that their long-running punk crew FSU has adopted DVD technology first and is spreading Boston's street cred globally.

Boston Beatdown is a really odd mix of brawl footage and confusingly vague militant rhetoric. It begins with an opening akin to an Al Jazeera terrorist video about the plight of the poor and the artists in gentrified Boston. Somehow this political theory is intended to justify the seemingly random beatings that follow. As the filmmakers should know, a good ass-kicking requires no real justification... especially on DVD. And the opening monologue notwithstanding, there isn't really any justification for these beatdowns. There are several interviews about how FSU (cleverly re-branded as Friends Stand United) is really just a small band of friends fighting back against the far larger gangs of skinhead thugs, but invariably this underdog mystique is completely invalidated by footage of 20 or so FSU kids beating up one dude. Hopefully Volume 3 will have some footage of the outnumbered FSU guys rallying to a victory against insurmountable odds... for now we'll just have to settle for the BoSox vs. NY.

SCENE POINTS:
Cast: Blood For Blood, Death Before Dishonor, Righteous Jams, Wrecking Crew, In My Eyes, Ten Yard Fight.

SMUT:
Well, the whole thing is obviously a guilty pleasure, but it's pretty much a sausage party except for the handful of girls who incite some of the beatdowns. As for gore, though, the special feature documenting a DiY stitch-job of a gash left by a broken bottle is absolute art.

CONCLUSION:
Yeah, you're supporting a punk gang which I guess isn't very positive, but you get to see them kick Moby's ass, which is pretty damn positive in our humble opinion and makes Eminem look like a fag by comparison.

DISHONORABLE MENTION: SHORT & BANNED PUNK MOVIE
RE-PENETRATOR
Burning Angel

Those crazy bastards over at Burning Angel have made a punk movie so over-the-top that it got banned by their billing company. Haha. Now that's fuckin punk.

A parody of cult classic Re-Animator, this horror/zombie-porn is the brainchild of Joanna Angel, who also stars in the film as an undead stripper that vomits blood while sucking cock (happens to the best of us).

This last minute inclusion is unavailable at post-time (since Burning Angel has not yet devised a legal means of distributing it), but we'll keep you posted at the news update section.

Amid riots, holocausts, beatdowns, and deified massmurderer-gurus, it's clear that punks are taking movies with a vengeance. What's really interesting, though, is the similarities and differences between the movies.

With the obvious exceptions of Art School Sluts and Re-Penetrator, it's interesting to see that the punks are leaning much heavier on violence than sex. This trend seems to be changing, though. Backseat Conceptions teamed with porn-punks Burning Angel on the banned short Re-Penetrator and King's Mob has conspired with post-Playboy-punks Suicide Girls on the upcoming Damned Nation. Further cementing the punk movie & porn connection, Tim Armstrong has announced that he will be collaborating on a book with Burning Angel.

With the exception of Threat and Boston Beatdown, these punk movies seem to be more for-laughs than one might expect. Sure, punk has always had an edgy wit, but usually that wit was used sardonically to deliver a real agenda. The street philosophy of Threat and even the beer-brawler ideology of Boston Beatdown come to the table with clear agendas, even if they're not quite as clearly articulated as recent documentaries like the medium-leftist Outfoxed or the straight-up anarcho Breaking The Spell. None of the punk rock digital movies listed above are documentaries, so that level of articulation is neither expected nor desired, but punk has always made up for low production value with fresh and engaging critical voices. Threat wears its overly-intellectual attitude as a badge of honor and Boston Beatdown is at least searching for a galvanizing agenda... and even Art School Sluts seeks to challenge the porn aesthetic, but overall it seems that digital punk movies are getting right out of the gate as fodder for the mall.

So as we sit and armchair quarterback the great digital punk movie race, it's far from clear who will get the flag and who will take the arrows. If you think back to the early days of Matador, Mute, SubPop, Epitaph, and Victory, you'll recall that they each started with their own unique voices and agendas.

Unique voices and agendas do not seem to dominate the list of upcoming punk movies, which may wind up being the biggest disappointment at the end of the day. After all, what's the point of a punk movie if it's less inflammatory than the mainstream movies it challenges?
