The
Gore Gore Girls, directed by Herschell G. Lewis,
tells the story of a string of serial killings of go-go dancers
and the efforts of a detective and reporter duo to track down and
stop the killer. The plot is very simple, very linear, laying a
surface foundation a mere two inches in depth with which to support
a lake of blood. The acting is wooden, campy and silly, the dialogue
inane and tongue in cheek. This is not Shakespeare. But is it entertaining?
Damn straight!
The strength
of The Gore Gore Girls lies within its creative murder scenes and
sheer raw pounds of brutalized flesh. The killings shown within
this movie are absurd, a riot. Celebratory music, fit for a circus,
plays loudly as the killer finds new and bizarre methods for the
termination of his victims. The style of Herschell G. Lewis is to
show it all; nothing is held back. We see flesh torn and eviscerated,
mangled to bare recognition until we notice that, hey, there's an
eyeball in that bloody goop, it must have been a face before! The
creativity with which the murders are performed, along with the
out of place music, provide a humor both black and absurd. Have
you ever thought to use the words "pulpified" and "buttocks"
together in the same sentence before? Well, me either. But if you
watch this movie, you'll have an opportunity to.
Sprinkled
in between the whacky slayings is assorted other oddities, including
exhibits of cheesecake gogo dancing, a Vietnam vet with a fruit
squishing obsession, and a short performance by comedian Henny
Youngman.
This release
by Something Weird Video includes a digitally remastered
copy of the film, along with an audio commentary by the director,
a wonderful peek at the gut twisting gore-fest of Love Goddess
of Blood Island, and a H.G. Lewis gallery of exploitation art.
