While
Ray Milland will probably best be remembered as the Oscar
winning actor from The
Lost Weekend, there was a time in the 70's when he charmed
the pants off of the B movie world. One of his crowning achievements
was The Thing with Two Heads.
Ray plays Dr.
Maxwell Kirshner, a racist and a mad-scientist (never a good combination)
who discovers the cure for life everlasting. This comes in handy
when he gets the news he's dying. He decides to transplant his head
onto someone else's body but things go terribly wrong when there's
a misunderstanding and he awakes to find his nugget attached firmly
to a black inmate on death row, Jack Moss (Roosavelt "Rosey"
Grier)!
Jack may have
been doing hard time but he's no fool and quickly learns of Dr.
Kirshner's sinister scheme to off his head so he can have that beautiful
black body all to himself. But like most convicts, he knows how
to even the score and whisks the good doctor away to Jack's girlfriend
Lila's (Chelsea Brown) urban apartment. The funniest moment
in the film occurs when Jack attempts to score a little action with
his lady. She's willing but just can't get her groove on with a
white man's head popping out of his side. She leaves and a frustrated
Jack looks at Dr. Kirshner and states, "now you know you got
to go!"
Ray gives it
his all as the racist-pig-doctor. He's a long way from his Oscar
glory days, but he's also a pro who adds a bit of class to any movie
he appears in. Rosey is fun and upon watching this film as an adult,
it makes me miss the big lug and his numerous appearances on The
Love Boat. Rosey, come back!
A better than
average movie, it still fails to pack a punch for the entire 90+
minutes. Despite an extra long car chase and some obvious opportunities
missed, it's still a fine addition to any B movie lover's collection.
The back of
the MGM DVD box sports some interesting facts, so let me add another:
Rosey Grier is Pam Grier's cousin. I just knew talent ran
in that family
