John Carpenter's Vampires

Directed by John Carpenter (duh)

The only reason I rented this was to see Sheryl Lee tied up. My friends had already warned me that the film was a piece of shit, so I had just my own prurient interests in mind when I forked over the $3.99 at the video store. While the gratuitous bondage scenes are worth the price of admission, I was pleasantly surprised to find this an enjoyably tacky "B" horror movie glossed up in big studio clothing.

"99...100. Now where is that creepy bastard hiding this time?"

The plot concerns professional vampire hunter Jack Crow (a wooden James Woods), who must stop the evil vampire king Valek (Thomas Ian Griffith) before he steals a magic thingy and is able to walk in the sunlight. Helping fight the good fight are a chunky Daniel Baldwin as Crow's sidekick Montoya, a nerdy Catholic priest (Tim Guinee), and Sheryl Lee (Twin Peaks, Backbeat) as a buxom prostitute who has been bitten and somehow provides a psychic link to the vampire's whereabouts. Overall, this is like a modern day comic book brought to life on the silver screen: utterly pointless, but fascinating all the same.
Along the way we are treated to excessive gore, flaming vampires, decapitated priests, slaughtered hookers, horrible dialogue, penis jokes, misogyny, and one particularly hot (and completely unnecessary) scene of a nude Ms. Lee tied face-down on a bed.

In short, this is not the finest moment in the career of a man who has brought us such memorable classics as The Thing, Halloween, and Escape From New York. Still, if it's cheap thrills you're looking for, this one ain't bad.

The film is presented in both widescreen and regular screen format, and extras include commentary by John Carpenter.
